TELEVISED SPARTAN SPORTS: The best place to see Spartan sports events in Orange County is at Rudy’s Sports Bar, 3110 Newport Boulevard, Newport Beach.  If a Spartan game is broadcast anywhere, Rudy’s will pick it up.  Now that basketball season is behind us, we can again get together and watch State’s powerful football team.  Come and join us!

Last Year's 2005 Golf Tournament
Tom Izzo was keynote guest at last year’s annual Scholarship Golf Tournament & Dinner held at El Niguel Country Club. Nearly $40,000 was raised at the tourney.  This money enables our club to fund scholarships for Orange County students attending Michigan State as well as supporting other University needs.

2006 GOLF TOURNAMENT

The 2006 golf tournament should be equally exciting. It will held on Monday June 5, 2006 at Mesa Verde Country Club.  This is a private, exclusive course in Costa Mesa.  Besides the tourney, there will be a sit down dinner.

Note, Mesa Verde dress code does NOT allow denim apparel and is a non-metal spike golf course.

It is not too late to volunteer for the event, become a Corporate Sponsor (only $250) or a “Tee” Sponsor (only $100).  Call our golf committee chair, Gary Pyatt, at (714) 968-0091 or email him at g.pycoa@verizon.net
Special Guest

JUD HEATHCOTE Head basketball coach 1976-1995 (19 year) 340-220 (.607%)

Last February 2005, a special event, which included a Newport Harbor cruise, was held.  JOHN L. SMITH was our keynote speaker.  We raised nearly $30,000 for the football weight room.  An equally exciting event is being planned for later this year.  Check frequently on our club’s website ( www.michiganstate.org ) for events and details.  GO GREEN!

Are you a softball spectator, or superstar?  In either case our club needs you.  Last season, our club’s first, we won our series.  Michigan State was the best of all of the Big Ten Orange County teams.  Watch our website for 2006 plans.  www.michiganstate.org .

Reflective Thoughts - My Sesquicentennial Visit by Judie Thompson

I visited  Michigan State University for the first time in several decades (that's right, I said several decades) this past October with my husband and son; neither of whom had been so honored previously.    What a treat for all three of us!  It was absolutely wonderful and both my husband, Jim, and son, Jeff, were most favorably impressed.  The campus has retained all of its charisma and character as I knew it many years ago; yet has become a state of the art technologically advanced University. The magnificent fall colors were strutting their stuff and the friendliness of the students and staff was unprecedented.  What a magical, moving, memorable visit it was for me.  I most certainly will not allow many years to roll by before I make a return trip.

(l. to r.) Jim Thompson ( Judie’s husband), Jeff Thompson ( Judie’s son), and Judie Thompson

Hmmmmmmm, I wonder....... were those rain drops trickling down my cheek (without a cloud in the sky) as we headed towards home; or had my emotions surfaced as this Most Significant Unparalleled trip was drawing to a close?  Yes, MSU, I love thy shadows and my memories will always linger over those wonderful years I spent with you.  I am still singing all of my praises for my Alma Mater, M. S. U.!

(Note:  Judie is a MSU Orange County Alumni Club member.)

Reflective Thoughts P rospective Student by Jeff Thompson Top

As a prospective student for one of the nation’s top universities, I happened to find myself in East Lansing for a football game.  Besides the beating that the team took, everything else seemed to be first rate.  One of the things that impressed me the most turned out to be how friendly everyone was.  Repeatedly one person after another would acknowledge us even though we had no other ties to them.  The campus seemed rich in history yet very up to date technologically.  From the supercollider to the basketball teams’ film review, I was impressed.  Surprisingly to me, MSU just happened to be at the top in many different categories.  Due to this trip my heart may just have been swayed to become a Spartan and I can’t wait to make another trip to the dairy store (for some of their delicious ice cream!).

(Note: Jeff Thompson ( Judie’s son) is contemplating attending State.)
